Update: DWP payments during postal strike

04 November 2009

The Communication Workers’ Union has confirmed further strike action will take place on Friday 6 and Monday 9 November.

This action will cause disruption to postal services nationwide, and may affect DWP customers who get paid by cheque.

DWP customers who get paid directly into their account will not be affected and payments will be made as normal.

Arrangements have been made to send cheques out early so they are not delayed during the strike. Cheque payments for Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment & Support Allowance that would normally be issued on 3, 4, 5 or 6 November, will be issued on Tuesday 3 November. This includes Northern Ireland cheque payments for these benefits and includes cheque payments made using the Local Payment System.

Resource Management Payments, which include payments for New Deal customers, will also be advanced. Payments normally issued on 4, 5, 6 and 9 November will be issued on Tuesday 3 November.

Additionally, State Pension and Incapacity Benefit for payments due on 4, 5 and 6 November will be advanced early so that customers get cheques by their due date.

We will not be issuing cheques for other benefits or allowances early, these will be sent as normal and are expected to arrive in time for customer payment dates, although there may be delays in a few cases. If this does happen, customers should contact the DWP office that they normally deal with.
