The Queen's speech to Parliament on 3 December 2008, which sets out the Labour government's legislative agenda for the year, is expected to include the controversial welfare reform which aims to get people off benefits and "support" the sick and disabled back into work.

A national consultation by Action for M.E., supported by the Disability Alliance and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, has revealed that people with long-term fluctuating conditions are "terrified" that new, more stringent benefits assessment procedures and an enforced return to work, before they are well enough, could further damage their health.

GOVERNMENT FAILING MOST VULNERABLE

As the government fights to prove that it understands the hardship faced by the most vulnerable people in society, a national survey published this week shows that many people who are severely affected by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Encephalopathy (M.E.), have to struggle through the appeals system before they are awarded Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

This year, Action for M.E. has chosen the theme of Men and M.E. for its Awareness Week campaign, which runs from 7th – 13th May. But while the focus is on men, we are also looking at the impact of this disabling illness on carers – many of whom are wives and mothers who have had to become the main breadwinners for the family.

Action for M.E.’s theme for its 2007 campaign is Men and M.E., which will include a major survey to discover how this chronic, debilitating illness impacts on men – including how the illness might affect men’s sense of masculinity and identity, and their likelihood of getting quickly diagnosed. A ‘fast’ diagnosis (i.e. within one year) has been shown to significantly reduce recovery time*.

Over £500,000 Research Observatory

Action for M.E., the UK’s leading M.E. charity, has received over £500,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to establish a national M.E. Research Observatory. The grant will allow Action for M.E. to fund, for the first time, a coherent programme of research into the causes and distribution of M.E.
